With Wings On it…

When you talk about wings and flash, the comic-book character The Flash comes to mind. What the wing-wearing (on his head hoodie, remember?) has to do with fishing, I am not sure. However, wings and flash go together like biscuits and gravy or salmon and a smoker.
Of course, what I’m talking about is not comic-book stuff but rather Yakima Bait’s new Big Al’s Winged Fish Flash.
Take the Fish Flash and add Mylar wings, and you’ve got it. The wings are cut in strips and jut out from the base of the Fish Flash. The length of the wings is determined by the size of the flasher. Currently, the Winged Fish Flash comes in 6-, 8- and 10-inch sizes.
“Yakima Bait knew it was on to something when it started out early testing the Winged Fish Flash finishes,” says company spokesman and avid fisherman Trey Carskadon. Buzz and the company provided them to a number of different guides and recreational fishermen in the spring and asked them to report back. They did, and the reports were glowing.
“Particularly in the early season,” adds Carskadon, “when the water in the area was off-colored, the Winged Fish Flash cut through it resulting in more hook-ups throughout an otherwise difficult spring chinook season.
“Fast forward to the Buoy 10 fishery where they were in full-scale use, and again, the reports were gratifying. Some days they outfished the standard Fish Flash, and on other days they didn’t but still performed well. They have turned into another good tool for the fisherman.”
He adds that, of course, the willingness of salmon to bite changes frequently, and some days they “want more bling” while on other days they don’t. In off-colored water or in cooler water, the Winged Fish Flash seems to do better than the Fish Flash, but like all things fishy, your mileage may vary.
The Winged Fish Flash has all the usual goodies associated with its flightless cousin. It has the same three-dimensional eyes, the stainless grommets that keep the swivels from wearing through the plastic body, welded rings and double-ended, ball-bearing swivels.
It is currently available in 15 finishes. For more information, go to: www.yakimabait.com.
